During a seminar held by PowerSeller CollegeTech, speakers explained how the import business was doing quite well during the 90’s. Consumers wanting to get their hands on certain items needed an importer to act as a middleman to make the transaction happen. However, like all businesses with middlemen making the deal happen, more cash needed to be shelled out for these brokers.
The Powerseller College seminar speakers then moved on to explaining how the internet started gaining popularity, with an array of shopping websites appearing out of nowhere. These sites allowed the two main parties in every purchasing transaction (buyer and seller) to deal with each other directly.
This in turn eliminated the need for a middleman of any sort, since consumers of online shopping and auction sites instantly became importers (in some sense) themselves. Moreover, numerous importers were put out of business because of the services offered by such websites.
Though several of these big businesses were forced to leave the industry, there are still some around playing the same game. According to Power Seller College Tech, many sellers on eBay either decide to buy their products for sale locally, from a wholesaler or importer, or even opt to imports the goods themselves.
That being said, should sellers be importing their merchandise from other countries and selling it online? According to the Power seller college guest speakers, the answer to this question is dependent on the seller himself. First, the current market price of the product to be sold needs to be considered. The next step is to find a multiple sources that can offer the product at a lower per unit cost.
If importing the item from outside the country will give a much lower per unit cost (inclusive of shipping fees) as compared to local sources, then the seller should import the goods instead. Also, considering importing goods in bulk may lead to further reduced costs on the per unit price of each item, which in turn further maximizes the profits made for the seller.
On the other hand, sometimes going to local import businesses, and purchasing goods from themmight turn out to be beneficial, especially when the items are bought in bulk, said one of the speakers during the Power Seller CollegeTechseminar.
Whichever source is selected, the Powerseller College speakers recommend conducting thorough research to determine which amongst the sources can offer the best prices overall.
